PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) today introduced its Mobile Student architecture delivering a seamless user experience for the education market. The architecture combines Extreme Networks switching portfolio, ExtremeXOS®-based user and device identity management with network automation, and a converged wired and WLAN data plane that scales to the needs of 802.11n deployments and the new mobile student population.
More than 700 education institutions run their campus networks on Extreme Networks, including UC Berkeley, Georgia State, Imperial College London, JeJu University Korea, University of Miami, University of Pendidikan Sultan Idris, University of San Paulo Brazil, Surrey University, Texas A&M, and Villanova University. The Mobile Student architecture is being demonstrated at EDUCAUSE booth #1760 this week.
"With the Mobile Student architecture, Extreme Networks is introducing a powerful new architecture for identity management, giving schools sophisticated access controls for students and their mobile devices," said Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst for ZK Research. "Colleges typically turn over a quarter of their student body annually and must provide different levels of access for staff and students. Therefore it is critically important that schools have powerfully simple network tools to deliver secure mobility."
Extreme Networks Mobile Student architecture combines the following elements:
-
Identity management, adding user awareness for deployable and efficient policy and access control, thereby helping eliminate the shortfalls of 'heavyweight' policy management systems that require additional hardware.
-
Stackable and chassis-based switches leveraging ExtremeXOS for intelligence, feature richness, and minimized total cost of ownership.
-
Universal Port capabilities that permit IT to secure the network infrastructure and protect valuable assets through automated device identification at the network edge.
-
Advanced WLAN access points and controllers leveraging Motorola's WiNG5 technology for wired and wireless data plane convergence and Extreme Networks switch infrastructure for data transport, thereby removing the bottleneck of traditional WLAN controllers.
-
Motorola's multivendor AirDefense Services Platform (ADSP) providing wireless security and network monitoring.
"Imperial College is effectively operating a fully converged carrier-grade Ethernet network, with different classes of users and data across a large metropolitan area," said Matthew Williams, head of networks and infrastructure, ICT, for Imperial College London. "The network upgrade project featuring the Extreme Networks mobility solution enables delivery of what the College requires: secure mobility, reliability and flexibility."
The Mobile Student architecture, available now, is designed to meet the mobility, performance and security challenges of educational institutions. With less public funds for education, the Mobile Student architecture was developed to allow educational institutions to use the network they have. The Altitude 4511 provides broad and consistent 802.11n performance in minutes for up to 10 dormitory or hotel rooms with a single access point.
