SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq: EXTR) today announced that its high-performance network solutions have been selected by the Sioux City Community School District to provide the communications infrastructure for a heightened education experience for students and staff. Built upon a seamless network that is optimized for the increasingly mobile world of connected users, devices and applications, the infrastructure spans the 30 facilities of the Sioux City
Community School District supporting 15,000 students and staff.
As the district was looking to support multimedia applications in the classroom, it required a significant boost to the performance, scale and intelligence of the network. During the selection process for the network infrastructure, emphasis was placed on high performance, pervasive and powerful convergence without overly demanding management while delivering a dynamic network to serve fixed and mobile students and staff in a variety of ways.
"Our choice of Extreme Networks has been strategic to the district because mission-critical applications, video, and services had to be implemented smoothly, down to every classroom and student," said Neil Schroeder, director of technology for Sioux City Community School District. "This included support of emerging applications, including automated attendance, grade books, and professional development training, in addition to multimedia, and most of today's services are Web or Cloud-based, and that makes the network critical."
"Sioux City Community Schools has proven that it can build a dependable network that is ready for mobile applications, services and the diverse needs of its students and staff without making compromises," said Paul Hooper, vice president of corporate marketing for Extreme Networks. "Considering its simplicity, performance, rich and consistent features, our solution for the K-12 market delivers the platform for the next generation of education connectivity."
Extreme Networks flexible and easy-to-manage solutions help schools to make the most of limited resources while providing a foundation for growth and expansion without added complexity. Powerful network automation capabilities help simplify the deployment, operation, and management of networks, freeing more staff time to focus on strategic initiatives.
To identify the right vendor to support its network, Sioux City School District worked with integrator SDN Communications to create and issue a request for proposal (RFP) that would complement its recently upgraded WAN. The district evaluated solutions from leading vendors in search of a new network that incorporated the right mix of features for mobility, convergence, availability, simplicity, and Power over Ethernet (PoE). Extreme Networks was their choice after demonstrating that its Ethernet switching solutions offer a consistent, high performance network with the ability to serve users from the edge, to the core and out to the Internet.
Following the removal of old routers and switches and their replacement by the new Extreme Networks switching platform, Sioux City Community Schools has benefitted by eliminating unscheduled outages during the day to reboot a device, or have the network fail as the communication demands continue to grow.
The new Sioux City School District network uses more than 100 Summit® X450 switches with Power over Ethernet (PoE) at all of its schools and facilities. The district's network is now more available, meets the needs of the mobile student and has a lower total cost of ownership.
