Built upon a seamless network that is optimized for the increasingly mobile world of connected users, devices and applications, the infrastructure spans the 30 facilities of the Sioux City Community School District supporting 15,000 students and staff.

As the district was looking to support multimedia applications in the classroom, it required a significant boost to the performance, scale and intelligence of the network. During the selection process for the network infrastructure, emphasis was placed on high performance, pervasive and powerful convergence without overly demanding management while delivering a dynamic network to serve fixed and mobile students and staff in a variety of ways.

To identify the right vendor to support its network, Sioux City School District worked with integrator SDN Communications to create and issue a request for proposal (RFP) that would complement its recently upgraded WAN. The district evaluated solutions from leading vendors in search of a new network that incorporated the right mix of features for mobility, convergence,  availability, simplicity, and Power over Ethernet (PoE). Following the removal of old routers and switches and their replacement by the new Extreme Networks switching platform, Sioux City Community Schools has benefitted by eliminating  unscheduled outages during the day to reboot a device, or have the network fail as the communication demands continue to grow.  

The new Sioux City School District network uses more than 100 Summit® X450 switches with Power over Ethernet (PoE) at all of its schools and facilities.  The district's network is now more available, meets the needs of the mobile student and has a lower total cost of ownership.
