New York's Kingsborough Community College Turns to Extreme Networks for 10 Gigabit Network

SANTA CLARA, CA, Jan 15, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX News Network) -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXTR) today announced that Kingsborough Community College (KCC) of New York has selected it as the network vendor of choice based on its solution scalability, its demonstrated open standards approach to technology and its common software architecture across its network switches delivered with its ExtremeXOS(R) operating system.

Kingsborough College, located in Brooklyn and supporting 20,000 students, required an upgrade of its Gigabit Ethernet backbone to high performance 10 Gigabit Ethernet network, in addition to replacing a mix of network equipment it had installed with a more streamlined, powerful and consistent LAN solution. KCC's primary goal was to realize an immediate return for its technology investment through a solid and resilient network that would support any service or learning application thrown at it.

The campus network supports a wide range of applications stemming from KCC's objectives for a state-of-the art campus, featuring IP surveillance for security cameras, integrated wireless LANs, network-connected research applications in each of its labs, including physics, chemistry, biology, nursing, library databases, among others. The network also offers reliability and impressive bandwidth performance required to support 24/7 traffic and scales to meet future growth and application demands. Extreme Networks comprehensive network solution consists of its BlackDiamond(R) 8800 and Summit(R) families of switches that seamlessly interoperate with standards-based technology.

"With the fast and reliable network from Extreme Networks in place today, we can do just about anything without thinking about who has to suffer for it," said A. Hussain, Chief Information Officer for Kingsborough Community College. "The result is that students and faculty are more productive, and the network staff is happier because there are fewer complaints."

The network is also ready to support future applications the college has planned, including videoconferencing for distance learning, facilities management and more. Continued Hussain, "Extreme Networks has great technology, reliable networking for communications convergence and an open approach that lets us make the best choices for the long term."

"Extreme Networks solution provides Kingsborough Community College with a high-performance network that gives students the right platform to thrive by connecting to applications and information," said Harpreet Chadha, senior director of product management for Extreme Networks. "Kingsborough reflects the trend for college campuses and large school districts to adopt Extreme Networks as they further their communication, learning and computing capabilities while keeping costs low."
