Extreme Networks Solutions Selected for "Green" Hospital Supporting Life-Saving Healthcare Applications

SANTA CLARA, CA, Apr 09, 2009 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX News Network) -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXTR) today announced that HMD-The Smart Hospital chose its energy efficient converged Ethernet solutions to create a network for the new Muskogee Community Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma. The hospital, which opened its doors in March, is the nation's first hospital that is designed from the ground up to earn the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star for superior energy performance.

Muskogee Community Hospital benefits from a network providing the capacity, resiliency, and security necessary to deliver voice, video, and large medical image files quickly and reliably. The new 45-bed acute care facility was designed as a "green building" and is intended to rank among the top 20 percent nationwide after a year of operations, using 24 percent less energy and emitting 24 percent less carbon dioxide on average than its peers.

In addition to choosing a green network solution from Extreme Networks to support all of its staff and patient needs, Muskogee was progressive in making use of geothermal energy, as the first facility to be 100 percent ground source geothermal to heat and cool the hospital, which significantly reduces costs.

"Our goal was to select the most robust, energy-efficient system on the market -- a network solution to include core, edge, wireless and security -- to reliably support our healthcare applications," said J. Jeffrey Adams, chief technology officer for HMD-The Smart Hospital Company, managing company for the hospital. "Extreme Networks has the right solution for this endeavor. On top of offering products supporting all of our needs, I just can't say enough about the fantastic expertise of the Extreme Networks team."

Based on Extreme Networks BlackDiamond(R) 8800 modular switches and Summit(R) X450 fixed edge switches featuring integrated Power over Ethernet (PoE), as well as security provided with the Sentriant appliances, the hospital's high-performance infrastructure supports its Voice over IP (VoIP) solution, mobility with wireless LANs, and Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS), which enables computerized sharing of images between buildings, departments, doctor's offices, and outpatient centers.

One of the organization's critical priorities is to ensure that the medication administration and image delivery system never goes down.

"When we set out to do this, we wanted to make sure the hospital's 'arteries' were the most secure and reliable possible so that the network would never be the 'Achilles heel' to the healthcare providers," said Adams. "Extreme Networks has provided us with the most reliable and secure network possible. My expectations have been met at every juncture."

"Extreme Networks delivers the essential features, performance and energy efficient networks that tomorrow's hospitals will require to stay competitive and have a positive impact on the environment," said Dean Tait, vice president of marketing for Extreme Networks. "Now more than ever, energy efficiency will be a part of the purchase process and we are playing a central role in the building of the innovative Muskogee Community Hospital."
