Extreme Networks Showcases Innovative SDN solutions, Partnerships, and Leading Performance during Open Networking Summit

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXTR), today announced that it will be present at the Open Networking Summit (ONS) event this week, April 15-17th, in Santa Clara, highlighting Software Defined Networking (SDN) strategies, technology and multi-vendor interoperability demos with Big Switch Networks and NEC. Attendees can view and discuss solutions at Extreme Networks ONS booth # 304.

Keeping with its tradition of market first innovations, Extreme Networks today features unique capabilities as the first vendor to ship both OpenStack Quantum and OpenFlow with fine grained control and policy enabled switching featuring hardware-based QoS on campus edge switches and purpose-built data center Top-of-Rack (ToR) 10G/40bE switches for server connectivity.

"The SDN market is rapidly evolving and we ship Ethernet SDN solutions from the campus to the data center that leverage our hallmark performance as well as innovations via the ExtremeXOS® operating system," said David Ginsburg, CMO for Extreme Networks.   "At ONS, we are furthering our Open Fabric approach to the edge and data center by showcasing unique, first to market performance capabilities, partnerships with leaders like Big Switch and NEC, and extensive interoperability tests and performance demonstrations based on OpenFlow."

Assuring Quality for SDN Flows
All networked applications are more effective and efficient with class of service and high scalability, and this applies to SDN.  Extreme Networks today supports Automated Flow Management and hardware-based Quality of Service with traffic shaping and QoS for its SDN-enabled Ethernet switches.

The ExtremeXOS® modular OS for Ethernet switches provides QoS profiles for SDN traffic with support for bandwidth rate limiting, and rate shaping with single or dual rate QoS policies and configurable drop policies. These capabilities are based on the company's extensive set of existing QoS features.  The QoS profiles can be assigned to OpenFlow enabled switch ports and OpenFlow can then be used to direct packets to specific queues within a QoS profile assigned to a port using OpenFlow match conditions.

ONS Partner Demonstrations

Extreme Networks will collaborate with Big Switch Networks at booth # 307 to showcase interoperability of Ethernet switches and leading SDN applications, including Big Tap and Big Virtual Switch (BVS).  Extreme Networks SDN and OpenFlow solutions will also be demonstrated at NEC booth # 103 showcasing southbound interoperability and multi-site controller capabilities of the NEC ProgrammableFlow Controller and with switches from multiple vendors.
