SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) today announced that its high performance cloud and data center solution was selected as the networking infrastructure by Falcon Broadband to deliver Internet and Wide Area Network (WAN) services to all of Falcon School District 49, just in time for the start of the 2013-2014 school year.
Falcon Broadband was selected by Falcon School District 49 to expand and deploy a new Internet and WAN infrastructure based on a custom solution designed for the Colorado based school district. The business was awarded to Falcon Broadband in February 2013 after they considered four other bidders and construction began in March.
Falcon Broadband is utilizing Extreme Networks Open Fabric solution consisting of the Summit series switches to support data transfer in the school districts private cloud and public internet access. Extreme Networks high-performance switching technology and network design delivers ring configuration resiliency and protection providing reliable Internet and WAN services.
The project required 15 miles of new fiber to be constructed to connect all 20 of the districts locations into the existing Falcon Broadband network. They were challenged to hit a tight deadline and faced some unexpected delays due to tough sandstone rock areas. The construction delays left nine locations unconnected with only one month to work before the school year started on August 1st. Falcon Broadband succeeded in getting all the locations active by the first day of school.
"We require total availability from our new network as we need an infrastructure that scales for thousands of different end-users and thousands of different devices," said Stephanie Wurtz, Public Information Officer for Falcon School District 49. "Our experience with Extreme Networks and Falcon Broadband has been exceptional as the design, delivery and installation of the solution have been completed by the start of the new school year."
Falcon School District 49 consists of nine elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools, one alternative middle/high school, one online virtual academy, a site for homeschool enrichment and two administration buildings. Each site received a Gigabit Ethernet WAN connection that will service the 15,000 students for the start of this school year. District 49 also includes several charter schools and offers early childhood programs, special education inclusion, gifted and talented programs, and vocational career academies.
