SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 26, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: EXTR) today announced that its Smart OmniEdge™ solutions are deployed at Brigham Young University's (BYU's) LaVell Edwards Stadium as part of the University's effort to provide an interactive game day experience for its tech-savvy fan base. With an Extreme-powered network, BYU is the first collegiate football stadium in Utah to have an NFL-caliber, hi-density Wi-Fi system. Installed prior to the 2018 season, the network has seen high utilization, with its home opener seeing 63 percent adoption and fans transferring as much as 6.33 TB of data.

Extreme installed approximately 1,250 ExtremeMobility™ Wireless Access Points (APs) throughout the 64,000-seat arena, along with ExtremeSwitching™, ExtremeAnalytics™, ExtremeManagement™ and ExtremeControl™ software ahead of the 2018 football season. The ExtremeAnalytics software enables BYU to see which applications fans are using on the Wi-Fi network, and what the response time is for each application. This allows the school to optimize the network for maximum application performance and provide a customized experience through advertising and marketing initiatives.

Key Benefits:

  • Game Day Application Support – With a professional-grade Wi-Fi network in place, BYU fans can enjoy a seamless second-screen experience during games via a new, interactive Game Day app developed by Pesci Sports. The app offers real-time statistics, on-demand highlight videos, social media interaction, access to the radio broadcast and interactive games. They can also interact with a new social media video board located inside the stadium via the app.
  • Mobile Ticketing and Payment – BYU has also implemented mobile ticketing and a mobile point of sale (POS) system for its vendors leveraging its new, high-density Wi-Fi network. These options provide convenience and security to fans and vendors alike.
  • Stadium of Fire – Each July 4th, LaVell Edwards Stadium at BYU hosts the Stadium of Fire event. Attendees will now have access to high-density Wi-Fi, making it easier for concert-goers to engage with the event through social media.
  • Carrier Offload – BYU is the one of the first university venues to leverage its Wi-Fi installation to implement a Wi-Fi offload solution, which is used in many NFL stadiums. Through this system, any mobile device can be automatically authenticated by its carrier network and rerouted to the stadium Wi-Fi network during the game to provide service.
  • Unparalleled Reliability – By implementing ExtremeApplications™, including ExtremeManagement and ExtremeControl, BYU network administrators have increased network visibility, automation and security, enabling them to identify and solve issues with little downtime for critical applications like ticketing and point of sale.

The updated Wi-Fi network went live at the start of the 2018 football season. Regular season home games saw an average of 61% network utilization and a peak adoption rate of 71 percent. Peak data transfer was 6.33TB with 22,240 concurrent devices, and peak throughput was 4.55TB with 22,240 concurrent devices.

As the Official Wi-Fi Solutions Provider of the NFL, Extreme was selected by BYU due to its proven track record of delivering wired and Wi-Fi connectivity or Wi-Fi analytics solutions to 28 NFL stadiums, including the past five Super Bowl venues.

Executive Perspective

John Brams, Director of Hospitality, Sports and Entertainment, Extreme Networks, Inc.
"Mobile technology is an integral part of the game day experience, whether fans are at an NFL or college football game. BYU recognized this trend and sought an experienced partner to deliver state-of-the-art Wi-Fi connectivity throughout LaVell Edwards Stadium. From now on, BYU fans can augment their game day experience with a 'second screen' experience, and staff can leverage the high-density Wi-Fi network to improve operations. Extreme is happy to have been part of this improvement."
