Building the Medical Operating Room (OR) of the Future: Global Visualization Leader Barco Selects Extreme Networks Open Fabric Network Switches for its First OR-over-IP Solution

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) today announced that medical imaging expert Barco is deploying its Open Fabric network solution to underpin the medical imaging solutions as part of its Nexxis visual display solutions addressing mission critical healthcare inside the operating room (OR) and the hospital.  Nexxis has already been successfully implemented in numerous hospitals through its network of top-rated Integrators.

Barco stands as a leading global developer of visualization solutions for a variety of selected professional markets: control rooms, defense & aerospace, digital cinema, healthcare, media & entertainment and simulation & virtual reality.  Extreme Networks Open Fabric Ethernet solution provides resilient, low latency 10/40GbE connectivity that serves to enable improved patient care at leading hospitals in the US and Europe. The Barco Nexxis solution for the OR is a fully networked digital operating room. This 'OR-over-IP' approach enables more advanced imaging in an increasingly complex environment and ensures centralized control of the entire Operating Room. Extreme Networks 10 GbE network switch is the backbone of the digital OR system architecture. It ensures distribution of video, audio and data with near-zero latency, in and beyond the OR.

Barco's Nexxis integrated OR solution sets itself apart from other systems by its IP network-centricity. While in traditional OR integration solutions, AV systems connect devices like endoscopy cameras, computers, scanners and surgical displays, Nexxis uses a high bandwidth 10 Gbps IP network to integrate surgical equipment.  One Extreme Networks 10GbE switch can be used to host multiple operating rooms and allow technical issues to be monitor and solved, without entering the OR.

"Extreme Networks was the right choice for our digital operating room solution because of its low latency speed and reliability and service options," said Johan Stockman, VP Strategic Marketing Surgical Imaging for Barco. "We needed a next generation Ethernet fabric switch that could immediately accommodate our requirements where accuracy, availability and stunning images are the everyday expectation.

"We are very proud of our relationship with Barco. As they incorporate our Open Fabric state of the art switches into their world-class offerings, it allows them to address complex challenges resulting in very simple and cost effective solutions for their customers" said Eileen Brooker, vice president of global alliances for Extreme Networks. "The collaboration between Extreme Networks and Barco today is a terrific fit for healthcare around the world."
