Extreme Networks and PCM Elevate the Wi-Fi Experience for World Champion Chicago Cubs Players, Coaches and Fans as Part of The 1060 Project at Wrigley Field

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) and PCM, Inc. (NASDAQ: PCMI) today announced that they have been selected by the World Champion Chicago Cubs to deploy pervasive and secure high-density Wi-Fi at Wrigley Field as part of The 1060 Project. This project is a $750 million multiyear upgrade that was launched in 2014 to ensure viability of the ballpark and the surrounding area through structural upgrades, improved player facilities, new fan amenities and more entertainment attractions.

The Chicago Cubs conducted a rigorous selection process and chose Extreme based on its complete suite of core to edge wired and wireless complementary networking products and proven track record of successful large-scale deployments in stadiums nationwide. The Cubs deployed Extreme's end-to-end connectivity and analytics solutions in Wrigley Field's newly renovated, 30,000 square-foot underground clubhouse, which offers players the best-in-class facilities needed to train and prepare for games. This implementation will also eventually provide coverage for The Park, a 50,000 square-foot open-air entertainment venue.

As the Chicago Cubs continue to invest in Wrigley Field's smart campus, Extreme, together with partner PCM, will extend its ExtremeWireless™ access points and wireless controllers, ExtremeManagement™, ExtremeControl™ and ExtremeAnalytics™ solutions throughout the stadium to elevate the fan experience. By the time The 1060 Project is completed, Extreme will have deployed over 1,000 access points across Wrigley Field and its surrounding district.

Wi-Fi Deployment Key Facts

  • Innovative Underground Clubhouse Design - Unique to this deployment was the Chicago Cubs' 30,000 square-foot underground clubhouse. With Extreme's end-to-end solution, the IT team is able to allocate and control the wireless network to ensure staff, players, coaches and the media have reliable coverage.
  • Advanced Wireless Technology - The Cubs clubhouse and The Park will be outfitted with Extreme's flow-based 802.11ac Wave 2 technology, including 50 new access points that deliver upgraded speed, as well as additional capacity and enhanced security.
  • A Winning Partnership with PCM - Extreme partnered with PCM, who provided consulting and project management for the overall planning and implementation of the wireless network at Wrigley Field.
  • Future Developments - Following the clubhouse, Extreme will shift its focus to the in-ballpark renovations, which will leverage 1,000 Extreme access points to provide fans with an improved wireless experience.

Executive Perspectives
Andrew McIntyre, Vice President of Technology, Chicago Cubs
"Extreme has an impressive portfolio of successful products implemented in large-scale stadiums and arenas. When the team was seeking a wired and wireless vendor to support The 1060 Project, we needed a partner that would help us bring our vision to life and lay the groundwork for an effective, reliable network. We're excited to have found that partnership in PCM, our IT solutions provider, and Extreme Networks."

John Brams, Director of Sports & Entertainment, Extreme Networks
"Extreme is thrilled to work closely with the Chicago Cubs and PCM on The 1060 Project. It was both challenging and exciting to create a customized implementation strategy that would support the one-of-a-kind underground clubhouse, ensuring that coaches, players and staff would have their wireless needs met without interruption. We look forward to continuing this partnership and extending our efforts into Wrigley's in-stadium seats to provide even better Wi-Fi support for fans."
